When whisky historian Alfred Barnard visited in 1885, he described Campbeltown as 'Whisky City'. At that time, the area had 21 working distilleries, which Barnard took two weeks to tour. Interesting fact: The demand for whisky at the early part of the 20th century drove Campbeltown productions rates so high that impurities were carried over The Scottish island of Islay (pronounced eye-luh) is located to the west of the mainland and is the smallest Whisky region in terms of area coverage in Scotland. Due to the large area, whisky in the Highlands is very diverse and offer a vast amount of different flavours so no one style prevails. Highland distilleries do, however, make up to 25% of all Whisky produced in Scotland. If you include the region of Speyside into this, the figure rises to as much as 85%. Campbeltown Scotch Whisky

Speyside is located in the northeast of Scotland surrounding the River Spey, and while it’s one of the most famous of Scotland’s whisky-producing areas it’s actually classified as a sub-region of the Highlands. A visit to a whisky refinery is an extraordinary and remarkable experience, and regardless of where you are in Scotland there will be a refinery close-by. An outing round Scotland isn’t workable for everybody, so it is educated about the attributes of every area’s whisky, and tailor going to refineries to individual taste.

We have all heard of the different regions or areas of Scotland where whisky comes from, but why are particular distilleries designated as Highland or Lowland whiskies and does this have an influence on the style of whisky.
